Among the 2023 Laureates is Liu Shaochuang, a Chinese aerospace scientist with a passion to save one of Asia’s last large wild animals, the wild camel. Born into a farming family, Liu was educated at Wuhan University and played an important role in aerospace development at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he helped explore the world’s greatest rivers from space. He played a key role in developing China’s Lunar and Mars rovers. From 2010 to the present, he has been deeply engaged in wild camel research and conservation in the Gobi Desert regions of China and Mongolia.
