Why letting go of competition will put you in the driving seat of your own destiny

The rules of THE GAME

Life isn’t a race, but from the moment we take our first steps it can feel like we’re constantly being measured against our peers. However, when we come to the end of our journey, most of us would probably like to feel we’ve made choices that are personally fulfilling to us.

Social psychologist Dr Helen Street explains why it’s time to ditch the comparisons and start living on your own terms…

It is very hard to meaningfully connect with other people if you see them as barriers to your own life success. Yet it seems that, at least in the materialist world, we encourage our children to consider success as a comparative process from the moment they are born. We don’t simply encourage them to consider success as achieving their goals. We also encourage them to consider success as achieving their goals more quickly and more effectively than others. As such, we encourage our children, and indeed ourselves, to consider success in comparison to the ‘stuff’, status and power that we see others attain.
