The Buzz About...NUMBER 96

Long before Euphoria, an Australian soap opera steamed up TV screens - and caused plenty of controversy. Making its debut in 1972, Number 96 was revolutionary television.

The series - which followed the residents living in a fictional apartment block in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Paddington - featured such taboo storylines as abortion, sexual assault, homosexuality, interracial romance and drug abuse. It also featured the world's first sympathetically portrayed gay, lesbian and bisexual characters, as well as the first trans actress. Unsurprisingly, the show caused as much uproar as celebration.
