There are certain moments in life that can stop you in your tracks. Hair loss is one of them. Far more than a superficial issue, the roots of its impact on our mental health are long, tangled and far-reaching. While it can often feel like something you have to accept or an almost impossible problem to fix, new advances in treatment, knowledge and early diagnostics are helping remove the taboo and create open dialogue for change. Building on the work and advice she offers clients daily, Kirby Lago, a colourist, Kerasilk ambassador and Goldwell national artist, unpacks the cause of hair loss and potential treatment options - one strand at a time.

While there are a range of therapies that help address hair loss, the most important first step is identifying the root cause.

According to Lago, a bit of daily shedding is completely normal. However, if you begin to notice significant changes, it might be an indication of an underlying issue or a sign that something else is going on.

“The amount of hair we lose varies between each individual. On average, we can lose up to 100 strands a day – which is completely normal. It’s more [of an issue] if suddenly you're noticing a big increase,” Lago says.
