WHEN ONE MEMBER OF THE FAMILY ON SCREEN JUST ISN'T ENOUGH...

-  Kylie Walters

Afamily affair

There is a saying that you should never work with family. It's advice Matthew McConaughey is glad he ignored when it came to casting his latest film. In The Lost Bus, the Oscar winner is joined by two generations of McConaugheys as he portrays Kevin, a school bus driver who helps a teacher and her class navigate through a raging inferno to safety. Kevin's mum and son are played by McConaughey's real-life mum, Kay, and oldest son, Levi.

“You know what [my mum] says after every single film?” McConaughey, 55, revealed to People as the trio sat down for an interview with the magazine. “Oh, so good! I see where you get it from.”

imageNow, Kay has had the chance to prove it. The movie is the second time the matriarch, 93, has joined her son on screen. She also had a minor cameo in McConaughey’s 2011 film Bernie. Acting is the realisation of a long-held dream for the nonagenarian, who always wanted to appear in The Golden Girls.

But while ‘MaMac’, as the family call her, might be a nepo mum, it wasn’t so easy for Levi to get a leg up into the film industry.
