Tributes pour in for the Hollywood legend, one of the faces of the Sixties thanks to his starring roles, celebrity romances and dashing good looks

Not everyone gets to be written into a song by The Kinks, but that was the fortune of Terence Stamp, the distinguished British actor and epitome of Swinging London style, who died on 17 August at the age of 87.

The line from Waterloo Sunset recalled his romance with Julie Christie, herself a doyenne of style. He was often referred to as the most "beautiful man in the world" and also dated the model Jean Shrimpton in the Sixties, while pursuing a career that burnt brightly before fading like the decade itself.

"When the 1960s ended, I ended with it," he said later. "I remember my agent telling me: 'They're all looking for a young Terence Stamp."

Tributes were paid to the actor, with colleagues saying that he would remain an inspiration for years to come.
