EGO: THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD
UNIQUE TIMES
|May -June 2025
Ego, it is such a common term we often use in our day-to-day conversations.
This very familiar word is often laden with negative connotations, but we all know it is indeed a complex and essential part of the human psyche. Ego plays a crucial role in shaping our identity, moulding our characters/behaviours, managing our self-esteem and controlling our perception of the world outside. Positively, in both professional and personal spheres, ego can act as a super catalyst for triggering ambition and confidence to trailblaze towards success. But unchecked, it can lead destructively to arrogance, conflict, biasedness and stagnation. Thoroughly understanding the dual nature of ego and learning to manage it skillfully is a powerful inevitable tool for long-term success, fulfilment and mental peace.
The positive role of ego in our lives inherently gives us a sense of purpose and identity. It fuels resilience, helps forgiveness, drives ambition, and empowers individuals to take up accountability and initiative. In the professional realm, a healthy ego can foster assertiveness, proper discernment, leadership and innovation. In our personal lives, it helps us to stay grounded, maintain healthy boundaries, assert our needs, validate ourselves, engage in constructive communication and build self-respect.
