Insurers Roll Out State-Specific Health Plans to Reflect Regional Healthcare Costs
-
Amid stark regional disparities in healthcare costs, Indian insurers are shifting from uniform health insurance pricing to state-specific models. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance has introduced tailored health insurance plans with premiums and benefits calibrated to each state's medical cost, infrastructure, and regulatory environment.
This move aims to eliminate inefficiencies in one-size-fits-all pricing and make health insurance more affordable for the underinsured segments. "At present, there is an element of cross-subsidy where people in areas with low-cost healthcare end up subsidising those in high-cost areas," explained Bhaskar Nerurkar, head of health administration at Bajaj Allianz.
Though policies are priced based on the policyholder's current residence, treatment access remains nationwide. Narayana Health had earlier pioneered region-linked insurance tied to its hospitals, while Bajaj Allianz has refined this approach by applying it across states.
"Claims frequency and severity vary significantly across India due to diverse hospitalization causes," added Satish Gidugu, CEO of Medi Assist.

Safety Perspectives - The Greatest Happiness of Greatest Number
The salvage dealer has many things to pay for, many expenses such as transportation, electricity, rent, employee salaries, machinery, and more. Hence, the salvage dealer would certainly offer a daily prayer: 'Dear God, please bless me with at least 50 salvage cases today and every day'. He wants 50 accident cases every day! There is no harm in his prayer. It is perfectly logical on his part to pray.
