Waste is no longer viewed solely as a disposal challenge. Manufacturers are redesigning processes, technologies and supply chains to recover value from materials, advance circularity and improve resource efficiency.
For decades, waste management was treated mainly as a compliance function. Today, manufacturers increasingly see waste streams as value sources, driving investments in circular production systems, material recovery technologies and industrial collaboration that improve sustainability and operational efficiency.
Integrating circular principles
Integrating circular economy principles is often perceived as disruptive to manufacturing operations. “The most effective transition happens when manufacturers optimise what already exists through smarter material choices, efficient engineering and long-term product thinking,” says Alexander Enulescu, Founder & CEO, KonveGas. He mentions, “In the case of Type 4 composite cylinders for CNG, biogas and hydrogen applications, the focus is on lightweight structures, advanced glass fibre technology, lower material intensity and extended service life. These factors not only improve operational efficiency but also reduce the overall environmental footprint across the value chain.”
Sujan Parthasaradhi, Co-Founder & Chief Innovation Officer, Recykal, says, “The focus is shifting towards embedding material recovery, recyclability, and traceability directly into existing production and post-consumer workflows.” He adds that AI-enabled sorting systems, reverse vending infrastructure, IoT-enabled collection systems and material tracking platforms are improving material recovery and traceability. Companies are redesigning products and packaging for recyclability while integrating recycled content into production streams, supported by decentralised collection and segregation infrastructure that reduces contamination and logistics costs.
