India's semiconductor industry: Silicon dreams for engineering graduates
Manufacturing Today
|March 2025
With government initiatives, strategic investments, and a growing demand for advanced chips, the sector is set to transform India's tech landscape.

India’s semiconductor industry is poised for significant growth, driven by government initiatives, substantial investments, and a focus on building a robust ecosystem. For engineering graduates, this presents a unique opportunity to be part of a transformative journey that will shape the future of technology in India and the world.
It’s not just about self-reliance from our over-dependence on foreign semiconductor supplies but also about becoming a strong alternative for the world, along with countries like China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
India has been making a strategic push for the semiconductor revolution and is making progress in establishing itself as a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Currently, the Indian semiconductor market is around 6.5% of the global share and is expected to grow to 11.5% by 2030. From a sales value perspective of Global semiconductor, it was expected to be $630 billion in 2024 according to Gartner and expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2030. While Indian Semiconductor market is valued at $41 Billion and is expected to grow to $115 trillion by 2030.
The drivers of this accelerated growth of the semiconductor industry are
• Technological advancements: Innovations in communication (5G), connectivity of the physical world (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence across different domains are driving demand for advanced semiconductors.
• Consumer electronics: The societal adoption of smartphones, laptops, and other consumer devices continues to fuel growth and push the need for better VLSI Chips
