How MSMEs can survive in an era of rapid digital transformation
Manufacturing Today
|May 2025
Digital transformation is vital for MSMEs to boost productivity, reduce costs, and stay competitive in today's economy.
The digital revolution is no longer a distant future—it is here, reshaping markets, consumer behaviours, and business operations in real-time. This rapid transformation presents enormous opportunities and daunting challenges for MSMEs. With MSMEs contributing nearly 30% to India's GDP, 45% to total exports, and employing over 110 million people, their ability to adapt to technological advancements will determine their own survival and India's economic growth.
Despite their significance, many MSMEs struggle to integrate digital technologies into their operations. While larger corporations have the resources to invest in high-end tech solutions, smaller businesses often face barriers such as limited financial resources, lack of digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and concerns about data security.
A staggering 62% of Indian MSMEs remain offline, missing out on the operational efficiencies, cost savings, and market expansion that come with digital adoption. However, those who successfully embrace digital transformation stand to unlock new revenue streams and significantly improve productivity.
Key challenges in digital adoption for MSMEs
While the benefits of digital transformation are evident, several key obstacles hinder widespread adoption among Indian MSMEs. One of the biggest challenges is resource constraints. Many small businesses hesitate to invest in technology due to high upfront costs and uncertain ROI. Without dedicated IT teams or expert guidance, they often find themselves overwhelmed by the technical complexities of integrating new tools into existing operations.
A lack of digital literacy among employees can further slow down adoption. Many business owners and workers are unfamiliar with cloud computing, data analytics, or even basic digital payment systems, leading to inefficiencies in implementation.
