Agricultural shows are a great way for farmers to earn recognition for their animals, while also acting as a marketing platform for them
A livestock show is an event that brings together farmers to showcase their animals. These events can vary in size and scope, ranging from local and regional shows to large national and international competitions. At show competitions, animals are generally judged by a panel of experts, who evaluate the animals based on a variety of factors, including appearance, health and temperament. Shows also provide valuable networking opportunities for farmers and industry professionals, as well as a chance to learn about new developments and best practices.
WHY SHOWS ARE IMPORTANT FOR FARMERS
Livestock shows provide farmers with a platform to showcase their animals to potential buyers. In this regard, they offer primary producers a marketing platform. As a wide range of people, including other farmers, livestock buyers and consumers, come to these shows, farmers also have the opportunity to expand their network and build relationships with potential buyers.
Another important aspect of shows is that farmers can gain recognition for the hard work and dedication that goes into producing an animal. They are also an opportunity for farmers to build their reputation in the industry.
In addition, farmers can learn from other farmers, and educate the general public on animal production. This is an opportunity for farmers essentially to engage with the end-user: the consumer. While stud breeders produce animals for other stud breeders and commercial farmers, it is the consumer who drives animal production due to the principle of supply and demand.
By attending shows and observing the traits of top-performing animals, farmers can make informed decisions about which animals to breed and which traits to select for in their own breeding programmes.
