COTTON Challenging season ahead for cotton producers

Early indications are that South Africa’s cotton crop for the 2022/23 season could amount to between 75 000 and 80 000 bales, which will be slightly higher than in the previous season.

This was according to Hennie Bruwer, CEO of Cotton South Africa, who added that the latest weather forecasts pointed to yet another favourable agricultural season for South Africa. Above-normal rainfall and below-normal temperatures were being anticipated across the summer rainfall areas.
While excessive rainfall across the production areas had prevented many farmers from planting in time or at all, the higher moisture levels would nonetheless benefit dryland production, he said. This represented about 60% of the area planted to the crop in 2022.
