Animal health high on Namibia's agenda

The improvement of animal health in the Southern African Development Community region is one of the main objectives of the Livestock Producers’ Organisation (LPO) of Namibia for 2023, according to Thinus Pretorius, LPO chairperson.
He said it was critical that no effort be spared to ensure that the region was free of diseases that could jeopardise the prospects for the red meat industry in the new year.
“The animal health status of our neighbouring countries is of the utmost importance to Namibia,” he told Farmer’s Weekly.
“It is our intention to start promoting a disease-free Southern Africa this year.”
Disease outbreaks in countries such as Zambia, Angola, Botswana and South Africa, he said, “could potentially play havoc with the local red meat production industry”.
