Why interior design is becoming a tech job

SKETCH LESS, CODE MORE

Creativity is just one part of the equation when it comes to interior design. Whether managing complex fit-outs, collaborating across time zones, or presenting photorealistic renders to clients, design firms today rely on a powerful suite of software tools to get the job done better, faster, and smarter.

Across the industry, especially, where megaprojects and hospitality rollouts continue to reshape the built environment, design professionals are increasingly turning to software that streamlines operations without compromising on vision. From 3D modelling and project tracking to FF&E sourcing and studio admin, we explore the must-have tools modern firms are using to stay ahead.

From sketch to spatial immersion

From intuitive sketching tools to game-engine-powered walkthroughs, the digital design process is increasingly immersive.

At H2R Design, a London and Dubai-based interior design firm, a hybrid approach bridges conceptual freedom with high-end visualisation. “3ds Max paired with Corona Renderer allows us to create atmospheric, photorealistic renders that communicate detail, mood, and materiality,” explains Fernanda Lopez, interior design manager. During early phases, her team often sketches on iPads using Procreate. “The ability to move fluidly from a hand-drawn idea to a 3D model gives us speed and flexibility without compromising creativity.”

Another firm, Dewan Architects + Engineers takes this a step further by embedding Al into every stage of the visualisation process. Revit anchors their BIM workflow, but it’s supported by a sophisticated stack including D5 Render, Twinmotion, Enscape, and game engines like Unreal and Unity.
