GUJARAT ADANI INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (GAIMS): A MILESTONE IN PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE
Business Today India
|February 16, 2025
The Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) stands as a testament to the power of resilience and the success of public-private partnerships in the healthcare sector. Established in Bhuj, Gujarat, GAIMS has a rich history that traces its origins back to the establishment of the GK General Hospital in 1956.

Foundation of G K General Hospital
The GAIMS, originally known as G K General Hospital, was built in 1956 with a generous donation from Shri Gordhan Khetsi. Initially intended to serve the local community, the hospital became a vital healthcare facility in Bhuj. However, the devastating earthquake of 2001 in Gujarat wreaked havoc, destroying the hospital and leaving the community in despair.

In the wake of the earthquake, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister of India, visited the site and promised the local people that the hospital would be rebuilt along with the establishment of a medical college. Although the promise was partially fulfilled in 2004 with the reopening of a 300-bed hospital, the dream of establishing a medical college remained unfulfilled..
