APPLE CARPLAY ULTRA EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
What Car? UK
|October 2025
Apple's latest smartphone mirroring software adds a host of new features that might make life easier while driving – but it hasn't been universally welcomed. We take a closer look
MORE THAN 300 new models offer Apple CarPlay as standard. This feature mirrors your iPhone's operating system onto the infotainment screen of your car, offering a range of applications to keep you connected and entertained while you're driving.
This includes calling and messaging services, navigation tools and music streaming apps.
As with the Android Auto alternative, using CarPlay is a great way to stay connected on the move, because it’s illegal to hold or use a mobile phone while driving.
While most new cars are compatible with the system, its recently launched followup, CarPlay Ultra, is proving controversial. Several manufacturers have announced that they don't plan to implement it into their models, with some expressing data privacy concerns.
Here, we look at the new features CarPlay Ultra offers, what you need to use it and why it’s causing concern among some car brands.
WHAT IS CARPLAY ULTRA?Like the existing version of CarPlay, Ultra’s main purpose is to make information from your phone accessible on the move. However, in addition to making your car's infotainment screen more iPhone-like, CarPlay Ultra extends to the digital instrument panel.
Drivers can choose from a variety of layouts (designed by both Apple and the car’s manufacturer) and select widgets that display information from your phone, such as sat-nav directions, alongside data from the car, including speed and fuel or battery level.
