TORANA TOUGH!

Issue 505

"WHEN YOU'RE HOT - YOU'RE HOT" WAS A WELL-KNOWN TORANA ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN, WE TAKE A LOOK AT TWO HOT LX TORANAS, THAT ARE DIFFERENT IN MANY WAYS BUT SHARE THE SAME GMH DNA

- DAVE MORLEY

TORANA TOUGH!

How do you like your steak? Rare and succulent with a sprinkle of salt, or cooked right through with a handful of garlic prawns heaped on top? (Hey, no judging here, surf and turf is a thing.)

Or how about dogs? Are you a fan of the little yappers that can fit in a HQ glovebox (don't ask)? Or is a huge, slobbery mastiff more your kind of critter?

imageAnd what about your Toranas? Are you a matching-numbers, original-air-in-the-tyres type of Torry freak? Or does a beautifully done, but still modified, A9X clone do it for you?

The good news, kids, is this time we've got you covered. Can't say for sure about T-bones or terriers, but if we're living in Torana World, allow us to present one of each category.

imageLet's start with Melbourne-based Michael's LX four-door. These days, it's an externally very faithful A9X tribute, but in reality, it's actually a genuine L32-optioned car. So why would you take a factory L32 and make it resemble something it's not? Well, mainly because it's your car and you can do what you like with it. That and the fact that Michael built the car many moons ago when an L32 was just another Trarna.

JOHNSON'S TURBO VISION

It's a reasonably well-circulated theory that the mighty XE Falcon Grand Prix Turbo was a fairly desperate attempt to give Ford a chance at fielding a car in Australian touring car racing, moving forward from the axing of the Falcon V8 with the end of the XE model.

ALFA ROMEO SPIDER 1966-94

THE SHAPE introduced at Turin's 1966 Motor Show survived 28 turbulent years with just one significant restyle. Appropriately for a twin-cam, two-seat car it was called 'Duetto', and the man who won the competition to choose its name was rewarded with one of the first-built examples.
