Summer 2025

I congratulate you for selecting the Lincoln Nautilus as your SUV of the Year (Winter 2024) and congratulate myself for purchasing one a few weeks before your announcement.

YOUR SAY...

Of the Years

I have about 3,000 miles on the odometer and agree with almost all your positive statements about the vehicle; the hybrid in particular has provided unexpectedly great mileage. You wrote at length about the Black Label trim, but except for interior color options, some external trim, anda few perks, the Reserve III trim is virtually the same and many thousands less. I thinkits the sweet spot for maximum comfort and luxury. That said, Lincoln still has a way to go. It would be nice ifthe Nautilus’ cargo area had four, not just two, tie-downs and mesh pockets around the wheelwells. Overall, it's an excellent vehicle, and I hope Lincoln can continue to import it.

Thank you for photographing the Grateful Dead playing on the infotainment screen of your 2025 SUV of the Year. This one resonates well with us Deadhead readers. Keep up the great work.

I've been a MotorTrender for more than 50 years and have enjoyed every issue but have never written you until now. Something in the Winter 2024 “Of the Year” issue caught my attention: Asa lifelong Ford enthusiast, I liked your selection of the 2025 Lincoln Nautilus as the 2025 SUV of the year. In the summary data, you list the base price of the Hybrid Black Label you tested as $78,645. When looked up the same vehicle in Oregon, the base price is $119,000. Why the wide variation between what you reported and reality? What other information is subject to such a massive change?

IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS TO OFFER QUICK-TIME BATTERY SWAPS

John and Jane Public aren't warming to electric cars at the rate many in the automotive industry thought they would, and that's mostly because EVs still can't match the cost and convenience of gasoline-powered alternatives.

SMOOTH BUT GLITCHY

We're less than a year away from seeing “millions” of autonomous Teslas roaming the globe, if Elon Musk’s April earnings call prognostications hold true. How’s Full Self-Driving Unsupervised going? To find out, we flew to the first test market, Austin, Texas, and caught seven rides in the initial Model Y Robotaxi. (Austin is unique among American cities in offering a choice of autonomous ride-hailing services, as Waymo has a fleet of its Jaguar I-Pace cars available via the Uber app. So we resolved to attempt a comparison, beginning on page 86.) Note Tesla’s Robotaxi is not to be confused with its two-door Cybercab; rather, it’s based on a long-range dual-motor 2026 Model Y Juniper.

More Than a Charging Station, More Than a Fast-Food Joint, the Tesla Diner Might Just Be Crazy Enough to Work

In case you need the reminder, car companies don't own and operate restaurants. Then again, they don't own and operate gas stations, either, and Tesla has proven owning and operating its own charging network was a brilliant business decision. The Tesla Diner, though, is uncharted territory. Will history repeat itself?
