Nothing like a good road trip
Go! Drive & Camp
|August\September 2025
On a recent spur-of-the-moment family road trip, he was again struck by the immense beauty of our country and the absolute privilege we have to be able to experience it, says Mic van Zyl.
-
The July school holiday happened upon our family all of a sudden this year. There was a last-minute scramble by our Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, otherwise known as my wife, to put together a road trip to a section of our country that I have neglected for far too long: the western part of KwaZulu-Natal in the shadows of the Drakensberg.
We would be on the road for six days and five nights in total. We would start at the farthest point from home and work our way back, stay in farm-based B&B accommodation where possible and eat at country eateries.
I must admit that I felt somewhat “naked” without a rooftop tent, or my off-road caravan hitched to my Hilux. It would be my responsibility to ensure we made the absolute minimum use of tar roads and, as far as possible, travelled on roads that we had never seen or traversed before. Challenge accepted!
