Sometimes, when you see a 'new' bike in the mag, we've known about it for ages. Maybe not all the precise details, but it's been pretty obvious what's on the way and what it's likely to be all about.

SPORTSBIKE SURPRISE FROM SUZUKI...2026 GSX-R1000R

But this one was a surprise - and a beautiful, brilliant, banging one at that. Because all the received wisdom about sportsbikes was against us ever writing the words 'new Suzuki GSX-R1000R' ever again. Yamaha's dumped its R1 in roadbike form, the Kawasaki ZX-10R is getting a bit long in the tooth, and with the rest of the litre bike class moving ever upwards into a niche stratosphere, we seemed to be heading into a mainstream sporty roadbike future defined by the likes of Suzuki's GSX-8R and the Yamaha R9. All good stuff, but a level below the white-hot superbike class of yore.

Suzuki itself seemed to have confirmed that situation over the past few years, too. It let all its GSX-R models (save the 125, ironically) disappear, with the last 1000 coming a cropper after the last ratcheting-up of emissions regs in 2022. It's made a big push with the 800 twins, but the firm's big bikes have focused on value, extending the use of old GSX-R1000 K5-based motors in the GSX-S1000 range. Again, very decent kit, but a little short on glamour and sparkle.

imageThey must have been chortling into the sake in Hamamatsu when they were writing the press release for this one though.

RC30:HONDA'S HOMOLOGATION HERO

The A4 piece of paper on the fuel tank left there by its owner contained a potted history of the bike, the knack of how to start it, and a few of its quirks to look out for, my particular favourite being: “Front brake pads are about 20 years old, so pretty f***ed, and the rear brake does little but make the wheel dusty.\"

BSA'S BACK

Now, even we're not quite old enough to really remember BSA as a bike maker. The original firm closed down back in 1971, with the Birmingham Small Arms brand disappearing into the mess that was the British motorcycle industry back then. The name lived on through various owners and is now under Indian ownership, with the giant Mahindra conglomerate as the ultimate parent.

NEXT-GENERATION NORTON

Norton's new 1200cc sportsbike is nearly ready to break cover, and it's shaping up to be an absolute weapon. After months of whispers, blurry spy shots and internet pub-talk, the Solihull crew has just ticked off a major milestone: the big boss of TVS Motor Company, Sudarshan Venu, has been out thrashing it round a private track in the UK. And if that's not a green light for excitement, we don't know what is.

V4 TRICOLORE: NEXT-LEVEL...

If the RC30 is the epitome of smoothness and refinement, the Panigale is the very definition of violence and overwhelming levels of performance. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t refined or unsophisticated because it is all of those things, which — on the road, at least — is one of its greatest tricks... out of many.
