The Rise of Connected Safety Gear: IoT, AI, and the New Era of Accident Prevention
EM - Efficient Manufacturing
|December 2025
India's industrial rise is accelerating, yet a harsh reality persists: thousands of workers continue to suffer preventable injuries and fatalities each year. As the nation embraces Al and IoT powered connected safety, a transformative shift is underway, one that promises to replace reactive protection with proactive accident prevention.
India is energetically striving to establish itself as a key player in the global manufacturing arena, propelled by initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Viksit Bharat 2047,' which are significantly reshaping its economic landscape. However, this progress is marred by a critical concern: workplace safety. The Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) has delivered some truly shocking news: registered factories have recorded a staggering average of 1,109 deaths and more than 4,000 injuries annually from 2017 to 2020. Now, as we leap into 2024, the outlook is even bleaker, with assessments revealing over 240 significant industrial catastrophes that have led to more than 400 deaths, predominantly in hazardous sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and mining.
Crucially, these statistics do not account for the extensive unregulated sector, indicating that the actual human toll is likely far higher. For a long time, the approach to workplace safety in India has largely been reactive, relying heavily on passive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Historically, the essential protective gear has included hard hats, safety boots, and goggles, which are intended to reduce the severity of injuries instead of preventing accidents from occurring altogether. However, a technological revolution is now reshaping this approach, shifting from reactive measures to proactive prevention. This transformation is known as Connected Safety, a comprehensive framework powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is completely changing how we prevent industrial accidents.
