Leveraging AI in Machine Learning for Smart Manufacturing
EM - Efficient Manufacturing
|Efficient Manufacturing - April 2025
As manufacturing enters the era of Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are revolutionising traditional production models. This article explores how these cutting-edge technologies are reshaping efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness across the manufacturing landscape.
As an integral part of the world’s economy, the manufacturing sector has always played an important role, as can be seen from the stark sounds of assembly lines and factories. However, with rapid advancements in technology, manufacturers find themselves at a unique turning point where production models need to be entirely shifted and rethought. At the very epicenter of this shift are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), which act as the most effective motivators for businesses to not just change but succeed in a world with rapidly changing conditions. Al's adoption within manufacturing industries alone can lead to the astonishing valuation of $1.2 trillion for the world economy, according to a new report from McKinsey, proving once more of the tremendous value AI can have.
Even though most manufacturers are still trying to understand the early aspects of the integration of technology into their functions, it can be observed that there is a change that is taking place. According to a NetSuite report, a staggering 76% of executives in manufacturing think that AI and ML will underpin their functions within five years. This is more than a trend, this is an entire movement that is changing the nature of manufacturing - a movement that is referred to as Smart Manufacturing. As the world moves into the era of Industry 4.0, which is characterised by AI and ML, the expectation of superior operational performance, lower costs, and innovation becomes a reality to be pursued.
