Jann Mardenborough's rise from bedroom gamer to Le Mans racer is the stuff of dreams... and now movies. Here's five things you need to know about the new Gran Turismo film, including whether it's any good
>1 IT'S NOT REALLY ABOUT THE GRAN TURISMO VIDEO GAME
While the thought of watching A Player grind out credits on Trial Mountain for nine hours straight in a grey Japanese sports car might feel like the most authentic Gran Turismo experience possible, that's not exactly exciting to watch. Which is the same thought that crossed director Neill Blomkamp's mind when first offered an early script for a Gran Turismo movie. "That literally makes no sense," he told TG. "And then I read the script, and thought 'Is this true?' So I researched Jann Mardenborough and the GT Academy, everything that Nissan and Polyphony did together, and thought 'Holy crap this is awesome"."
Indeed, the real life story of a shy young gamer winning an improbable racing simulator competition who then went on to race in real life at Le Mans is fairly incredible as narratives go.
"I should do this film," he said. Not least because outside of being a proper petrolhead - Blomkamp's owned every Nineties hero car you care to imagine, including the Honda NSX, E36 BMW M3 and Ferrari. F355 he's also a fan of car films, too.
"I loved Ford vs Ferrari, I like Steve McQueen's Le Mans, I'm totally into them, I just never thought it'd be me making one. Which is weird because I am obsessed with cars. I'm much more into cars than I am into racing. I had to learn about the various classifications - GT3, LMP2s and all that," he said.

Q: IS IRACING'S DOMINANCE UNDER THREAT?
If you know anything about sim racing, you'll be aware of iRacing. It's the thing Max Verstappen does when he's supposed to be getting a tight eight hours of sleep ahead of a Grand Prix. It's also the most popular online sim racing service, with hundreds of thousands of active users. Nothing else compares to it in terms of fair and competitive online racing, and if you want to experience the thrill of being a professional racing driver but your dad didn't own a petrochemicals company, iRacing is the closest you'll get.

“THE LIGHTEST BENTLEY FOR 85 YEARS... I'LL LET THAT ONE SINK IN"
Only the fourth model in Bentley's history to wear the Supersports badge is by far the biggest swing of the bat. 'Super Sports' v1.0 arrived exactly 100 years ago, was the first Bentley capable of 100mph and only 18 were ever built. The next came in 2009 - the pinnacle of the first gen Conti GT range two seats, 100kg lighter and capable of 204mph. In 2017 the second gen Conti GT got a Supersports too with a 700bhp version of the burly old 6.0-litre twin turbo W12, making it the most powerful Bentley ever at the time.

Two recent startups offer hope for Jaguar, says Jethro
Imagine starting a car company from zero. A real car company. One that wants to sell in volume and must adhere to all the rules and regulations that apply to Ford or Toyota. One that satisfies a market that demands reliability, convenience and a level of all round capability that was unheard of just a decade or so ago. The task list is laughably complex. From creating a brand that resonates with a broad audience, to engineering a product to exceed incumbent class leaders and ultimately to market and sell in a ferociously competitive space. Oh, and maybe try to make some money too.

Lando Norris is as honest as champions come, says Natalie
There is something wonderfully poetic about Lando Norris securing his maiden F1 world title. Not just because of the speed, the statistics, or the storylines but because of the spirit and authenticity behind it all.

EPIC FAIL
What is the point of a concept car? Probably requires more than a single whimsical page to properly answer. But if at least one purpose of a concept is to prepare the ground for a future production car, to gently expand a brand's Overton window, then Chrysler's Super8 was an absolute smash hit of a success.
