NEW-ERA X5 GETS FLAGSHIP EV, RAD LOOK, DIVERSE FUELS

Battery and hydrogen EVs, diesel, petrol, PHEV for bold next-gen BMW

This is our first look at the radical new electric BMW X5, which has surfaced in range-topping M guise ahead of its launch next year to preview Munich's answer to the Lotus Eletre and upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV.

Electric power is being added for the next-generation X5, which is set to be the third entrant in BMW's Neue Klasse line-up – kicking off this year with the new iX3 (driven, p24) before the closely related new 3 Series in early 2026.

Unlike those two re-platformed cars, though, the fifth-gen X5 will use a redevelopment of the same CLAR (Cluster Architecture) that underpins the current X5, allowing the fitment of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. A hydrogen model is also planned for 2028, using a fuel cell co-developed with Toyota.
