Hyundai's Sixer
Auto Today
|June 2023
The Korean company has hit it out of the park with a bold and head-turning electric sedan (if one can call it that). We got the opportunity to drive the loniq 6 for the World Car Awards 2023 evaluation in the US and here is why it won three of them
-
The car that Hyundai calls the electrified streamliner was first showcased as the Prophecy concept in March 2020 and debuted as the second Hyundai car on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) on which the Ioniq 5 is also based as are and will be a range of Kia and Genesis cars including the EV6 and the Genesis GV60.
The Ioniq 6 is a head-turner if there ever was one. Its design has hints of some iconic models from Porsche and Audi but it is no sportscar. Hyundai calls it a sedan though it has a very severe coupe-like roof line. For design detailing and the light elements, Hyundai has continued to follow the parametric pixel design that it has used very successfully on the Ioniq 5 and to some degree on the Tucson as well. And while it looks relatively small, I was surprised at the space inside and so checked out the dimensions, first comparing it with the Verna, then with the Elantra, and finally with the Sonata, and was surprised to discover that it is longer than even the Sonata. And apart from being a long car, it is quite high for a sporty-looking sedan, again taller than even the Sonata. This explains why there is adequate headroom at the rear despite the sloping roof. What is compromised though is boot space at the rear but there is also the frunk though it is quite small.
