FIRST DRIVE Frugal supermini gets more potent hybrid system with Excel trim, but it's an expensive option within the range

- Max Adams

Toyota Yaris Excel

WE all like getting good value for money, so it’s nice to know that Toyota has enhanced its Yaris supermini lineup by offering the more potent 128bhp hybrid setup with the mid-range Excel trim, rather than reserving it exclusively for the flagship GR Sport as it had previously.

This latest setup should appeal to those keen to have more oomph in their supermini without sacrificing economy, because the extra power comes from a beefed-up electric motor, rather than a larger and less fuel-efficient petrol engine.

Power is up from the 114bhp in the basic setup (which is still available in entry-level Icon and Design trims) to 128bhp, helping to reduce the 0-62mph time from 9.7 seconds to 9.2 seconds, and making it slightly swifter than the rival Honda Jazz in the process. Fuel efficiency remains strong at 67.2mpg — around 3mpg shy of the 114bhp version.

imageYou'd have to try both models back to back to spot any difference in how they drive. The 128bhp hybrid makes it a little easier to get up to motorway speeds, although doing so is still accompanied by loads of revs, which is typical of a continuously variable transmission (CVT). At least you're not forced to spend so long experiencing that din given that you get up to speed more quickly.
