Cluckin' around the Christmas tree

Hens might not hang stockings, wrap presents or give a fig for festive telly. But anyone who’s kept chickens through December will tell you - they absolutely know something magical is in the air. Whether for some special pet hens, it’s being entranced by shiny wrapping paper, nabbing prime position by the wood burner or posing perfectly in front of the Christmas tree, they’re more than ready to join the family fun.

But behind the sparkle lies a serious truth: winter can be a challenging time for even the hardiest hen. As temperatures plummet and daylight dwindles, keeping your flock healthy and happy means adapting your care routine - while still finding time for the odd seasonal treat.

So from safe snacks to coop comfort and stocking fillers, here’s how you can celebrate Cluckmas in fine style.

imageEAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY

We all want to spoil our loved ones at Christmas — but when it comes to hens, it’s important to treat them safely and legally. According to UK law, it is illegal to feed your hens kitchen scraps, even from vegan households. That includes anything that has passed through your kitchen — cooked or raw.

The good news? There are still safe, enjoyable ways to give your flock a festive boost.

Try hanging a whole cabbage, cauliflower or bunch of kale in the run (brought in via the garden, not the kitchen), or scatter a few approved chicken treats from your local feed supplier. Products specifically made for poultry are ideal - they’re safe, balanced, and won’t land you on DEFRA’s naughty list. And remember: treats should make up no more than 10% of your hens' overall diet. When in doubt, shop BHWT’s online store for treats that taste good and do good.

BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE
