Jane Brooks looks at new qualifications for young people in the land-based industries
As the GCSE result season approaches many young people may be considering a career in the land-based industries, so it’s quite timely that after several years of consultations some interesting new post 16 land-based qualifications are being introduced this autumn, which require students to undertake both a technical qualification and an industry placement with an employer.
Vocation training in the UK is changing, new T (Technical) Levels are set to become one of the main choices after GCSEs, T level courses in construction, engineering and manufacturing were launched in 2021.
Now technical qualifications for agriculture, land management and production, including land-based engineering, which will be offered by Agricultural Colleges and training providers, go live from September 2023. Followed by T Level courses in Animal Care and Management in September 2024.
Developed in consultation with employers, sector bodies, industry and educational bodies to ensure that they meet all the needs of the sector, in essence designed by industry for industry, these two-year ‘technical programmes’ are designed to give students the high-quality education and the practical skills that industry needs.
