I have been fortunate to take an annual trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park for the past few years where I enjoy photographing the birdlife and wildlife that this beautiful park has to offer.
I always look forward to visiting the Craig Lockhart waterhole some 20 kilometres from the Mata Mata restcamp. There was a particular hole in a tree situated at this waterhole that has been home to a nesting pair of Pearl-spotted Owlets for many years (left). These little owls had taken over the hole that had no doubt been carved out by the woodpeckers that would have been residents at the time. It was always a treat to watch the antics of these fascinating diminutive birds as they popped their heads out of the hole to survey their surroundings.

Is NECHISAR NIGHTJAR a hybrid?
Vernon Head's award-winning book The Search for the Rarest Bird in the World brought widespread attention to the curious case of the Nechisar Nightjar. In 1992, a dead nightjar was found on a dirt road in Nechisar National Park, southern Ethiopia. A wing was collected and the bird was later described as a new species based on its distinctive large white wing patch. Its scientific name, Caprimulgus solala, attests to the fact that it is known only from a single wing.
