COLOUR POPS

Oriental poppies are June show-offs, waving their richly coloured, silky blooms above mounds of ferny leaves. Deadhead to keep the blooms coming, but when they’re finished, cut down to 7cm for fresh leaves and, fingers crossed, a second flush of flowers. Go-to varieties include burgundy ‘Patty’s Plum’, pink-peach ‘Maiden’s Blush’ and rich orange ‘Wisley Beacon’.
