Bringing Change To People Facing Discrimination

Last week we reminded you about Sally Wood-Lamont and her charity to create a hub for disabled people to learn life skills, receive support and develop sporting excellence.

As part of that process, Sally came up against a problem. Two members of the Lamont Centre had been accepted for further education – but first they had several obstacles to overcome.

They had been living in a halfway hostel for young people who had just left orphanages, but only had a few weeks left until they had to leave and couldn’t find accommodation that would meet their needs. They also had access and assistance problems.

The answer to the first obstacle was Sunshine House, a ground floor building which had been used for storage but which we could help make into a wheelchair-accessible apartment. We then built an access ramp and an accessible toilet at the local college. The assistance issue was solved by Robi, another disabled orphan, who undertook caring duties.
