When Saturday Comes
|September 2017
For decades from the 1960s the Anglo-Italian Football League provided a sanctuary for Italian immigrants who moved to the UK after the war.
In 1970 La Voce degli Italiani, an Italian-lan-guage newspaper based in London, ran an advert for the first edition of the Anglo-Italian Cup on its sports pages. There would have been a good deal of interest in the tournament among the 200,000 Italians in the UK; excited if somewhat bemused at the prospect of fixtures such as West Brom v Lanerossi Vicenza.
By this time, however, Italians in England had run their own competition for nearly a decade; on the pages of La Voce, news of the AngloItalian tournament for professional clubs was always given second billing to match reports from the Anglo-Italian Football League (AIFL).
