He has been the biggest enigma among Indian fast bowlers. On his best days he has been able to make the ball do things that no Indian pace bowler has ever done. He intimidates the batsman into submission making him look like a novice. He picks up a bagful of wickets looking every inch the Indian bowling spearhead that he is. But there have been days when he sprays the ball this way and that, is profligate and is a major problem for his captain.
That in a nutshell is Ishant Sharma. When he burst upon the scene in Australia on the 2007-08 tour he was hailed as the next superstar of Indian cricket. Those effusive in their praise included Steve Waugh, Damien Fleming, Richard Hadlee and Ricky Ponting whom Ishant had harassed repeatedly during the tour.
