National champions force themselves onto the world stage
British Cycling coaches are set to assess the riders from team pursuit squad KGF for spots on the GB squad after the national champions narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Track World Cup in Manchester at the weekend.
KGF, an amateur team based out of a shared house in Derby, finished fourth in 3.58.5, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal to European champions France.
That was only three seconds off the British quartet of Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Oliver Wood and Kian Emadi that beat Denmark in the final with a time of 3.55.8 — two seconds faster than the winning time at the World Championships in 2014, also just over two years until the next Olympics.
Triple Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy said: “We are taking notice of those guys. If they make the team pursuit then great; we’ve lost guys like Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas, Owain Doull, John Dibben, so the more strong riders the better.”
