Fuglsang wins Liège to claim debut Monument

New flat finish yields harder race but end game reverts to type.

The new flatter finish to LiègeBastogne-Liège had been much heralded, but in reality it changed very little as Jakob Fuglsang won the first Monument of his long career on Sunday.

Much like Bob Jungels’s win last year, Astana rider Fuglsang escaped a small group on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons, then soloed his way to the line.

The style of rider chasing the Dane in the final kilometres was the same as one would have expected in the closing kilometres to the race’s old, somewhat drab finish in Ans. Even some of the names were the same.
