Fortnite World Cup

While Fortnite, Epic’s world-conquering battle royale game, has yet to establish itself as a top-tier esport, that didn’t stop 2.3 million people tuning into the recent Fortnite World Cup across YouTube and Twitch. A whopping $30 million in prize money was up for grabs at the lavish tournament, which was held in New York City’s Arthur Ashe Stadium on July 26-28.

The biggest winner of the tournament was 16-year-old Kyle ‘Bugha’ Giersdorf, who won the solo tournament on the final day and pocketed $3 million. That’s a lot of cheese for being good at a computer game, but indicative of how popular Epic’s brightly colored shooter has become. Bugha’s victory made headlines around the world, and not just in the gaming press.
