Ghost ship

Yucel has shot the shipwrecked ‘Natalia’ every time he’s driven past and has built up a portfolio of seascapes, as a result

On December 19, 2018, the captain of the dry cargo ship, Natalia, called for help at 4.30am. The ship drifted to the shore due to a severe storm. At 9am, the ship hit the rocks in the Karaburun region of Natalia. 16 personnel on board were rescued by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety.

More than two years have passed since the Natalia ship was stranded. This region known as Karaburun, which translates to English as ‘Black nose’, on the black sea coast, is about an hour away from Istanbul. I decided to go and take pictures on January 18, 2020. The stormy weather conditions at the time were awful and it’s not a place to go without a vehicle, but I had to take a picture of the ship.
