1. The Exposure Triangle

It’s all about capturing light in photography. The majority of beginners believe that the magic of photography occurs within the camera body, however light is the ultimate source of magic. There are three factors that influence how light is caught and how the final image appears:

Aperture: The size of the lens opening in f-stops (f/2, f/5, f/11, etc.). The aperture widens as the number decreases. The larger the aperture, the greater the amount of light that enters. The depth of field is also influenced by the aperture size.

Shutter Speed: The length of time the shutter is open, in seconds (1/200 sec, 1/60 sec, 5 sec, etc.). The more light that comes in, the slower the shutter speed is. The sensitivity to motion is also affected by the shutter speed (i.e. faster shutter speeds freeze motion while slower shutter speeds produce motion blur).
