Warriors star dispels worries about his fitness with 17 points in his first game in 31 months

THOMPSON MAKES A SPLASH ON KLAY DAY

Klay Thompson started for the Golden State Warriors on Sunday after 31 months in which injuries pried him away from the National Basketball Association (NBA).

After a 21/2-year absence, the Warriors celebrated “Klay Day” with a 96-82 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Thompson – a key component of the Warriors’ dynasty that won the 2015, 2017 and 2018 championships – received a rapturous welcome at the Chase Centre in San Francisco.

It was the 31-year-old’s first game in the arena, which the Warriors have called home only since September 2019, three months after he ruptured his left anterior cruciate ligament.

Just as he was set to make his comeback for the 2020-21 campaign, he tore his right Achilles tendon in pre-season training, ruling him out for another year.
