But in a drive to appeal to a new generation, today’s Army is as likely to talk about “emotional intelligence” as military intelligence. A new publication is aimed at the needs of Generation Z recruits, those born after 1997.

“Habit of Excellence – Why British Army Leadership Works” brings together all aspects of Army leadership.

And its lessons, says author Lt Col Langley Sharp, reveal why old-fashioned military ideas still used in Beijing and Moscow ultimately weaken their forces.

Gone are the days when soldiers are expected to surrender their personalities and thoughts for the sake of a one-size-fits-all martial uniformity.
