FOR A FEW ROUBLES MORE Pressure at ATMs

Russians rush to take out roubles

SPOOKED ordinary Russians dashed to withdraw cash from ATMs yesterday as a wave of Western sanctions over Ukraine began to bite.

Long queues formed at cash machines in Moscow and elsewhere for a second day after the country's central bank was forced to more than double interest rates, and the rouble plummeted.

People were left fearing their bank cards may stop working or that limits will be placed on withdrawals.

In a possible sign that he is rattled, president Vladimir Putin banned Russians from depositing cash in foreign bank accounts, in a move that could hit the rich especially hard.
