Will you marry me?’ my boyfriend Eddy asked, holding out a sparkling ring.‘Yes!’ I squealed. Only, there was one problem. In the eight years we’d been together, I’d gone from a slinky size- 12 to a wobbly size-18.

I’d been too happy to care about my weight.

Now faced with the reality of walking down the aisle a fat bride, I vowed to give my lifestyle an MOT.

Loss and gain

‘I’m not saying “I do” looking like this,’ I told Eddy as I cleared the cupboards of stodgy snacks.

By the time we got married, I felt beautiful in my size-14 gown.

Six months later, I fell pregnant. And fell off the wagon.

Before long, the cupboards were full of chocolate again. And as my pregnancy progressed, I started craving full-fat milk, glugging up to four pints a day.

‘Are you sure you should be drinking so much?’ Eddy asked.

‘It’s fine,’ I’d reply. ‘The baby must need calcium.’

At 25 weeks, I went in for a routine test for pregnancy diabetes. But it came back normal, so I carried on as before.

As my bump – and my body – grew, I didn’t give my health a second thought until, at 36 weeks, a blood test showed my blood sugar level was dangerously high.

‘You’ve developed gestational diabetes,’ my doctor explained. ‘It can be brought on by an unhealthy BMI.’
