Ankur Dewani, CEO of PokerStars tells us what it takes to be a pro poker player.
Tell us something about the history of online poker.
The global online poker industry started in 2003. Poker in the West is as popular as teen patti in India. Abroad it is a culture for family and friends to play poker together in a regular manner. It is an exciting game with worldwide acceptance. It started in India in 2006, when Zynga entered the market. The trend is great, as number of players have increased from just 1,000 to nearly 1.5 million in India in the past decade.
How did your interest in the game come about?
In 2008, I completed my MBA in finance. I was excited about poker and often played with friends. Back then, I was working with Poker Planet and we sold Poker merchandise online. We also held a tournament where 300 people participated. The concept was early for its time. Poker grew in the online space as one had to attend live events in person and it was a lot more convenient to participate online.
