Four friends from down south set off on a shooting trip to Scotland with a shared goal in mind – to bag their first grouse. Dale Johnson tells us how they all got on
I have been organising a shooting trip since February for myself and three friends from Devon and Dorset so that we could all shoot our very first grouse.
We booked a trip through John of Prohunt UK for a week in Scotland consisting of walked-up various over pointers, with the quarry list to include pheasant, English partridge, snipe, pigeon, mallard, teal, widgeon and, of course, grouse. With much anticipation, Stuart Pyke, his son Mark Pyke, Mike Hedley and myself set off to achieve our shared mission.
On the first day, Mark shot his first-ever English partridge in style with a left-and-right, also managing his first-ever grouse with his 20g Lincoln. It was a day of firsts, as I also managed to shoot my first-ever grouse with my 28g Caesar Geurini. We all managed to fall into wet holes in the process and went back to the hotel with seriously wet boots.
