Nimble All-rounder

The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS comes as a very welcome addition to the lineup for many photographers. K Madhavan Pillai puts it to the test.

Sporting a longer reach than the standard 24-70mm f/2.8, and generally smaller, lighter and less expensive, by sacrificing a f-stop, while yet delivering a reasonably high level of optical quality, the 24-105mm is oft underrated. Yet, for many, it has become an integral part of the kit. So far, almost every other camera and lens company has developed versions of this lens. The FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is primarily meant for the E-mount full frame Alpha 7 cameras, the lens can also be used on Sony’s APS-C mirrorless cameras, providing an equivalent of 36-157.5mm.

Features

The FE 24-105mm has a constant maximum aperture of f/4. 17 elements in 14 groups include four aspherical elements, two of which are Advanced Aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion and to improve sharpness, and three extralow dispersion elements to minimise color fringing and chromatic aberrations. Nano AR Coating reduces flare, and ghosting. The front lens element is coated with fluorine to protect against smudges. The lens is sealed against dust and moisture.
