Kick-starting classic bikes can be a world of pain.
My father was fond of dispensing advice in bite-sized chunks. On marriage, he warned me not to neglect my homework. In my career, he told me to make my own luck and in life, to play a straight bat. He rarely elaborated, which made his wisdom both memorable and timeless.
Another gem was to be careful what I wished for and this is especially apt as I get older. With the kids gone and the mortgage not far behind, turning wishes into reality is easier done than said. Whims can be accommodated if I don’t go silly.
My Norton is a case in point. Despite being happily married to a wonderful Ducati for more than 20 years, I lusted after something on the side to spice things up, an old flame even. I got my wish and have been paying for it ever since. After yet another rebuild (don’t ask), I’m hoping the worst of it is behind me because the best is sitting out there in the shed right now waiting for the pain in my leg to subside so I can ride it again. With a brand-new Combat motor, the old girl is really flying but, after shaving both head and barrels, she’s not exactly short of compression and I’m not exactly getting any younger.

Keeping Girls On Motorcycles
On any given weekend at your local motorcycle club, you will see throngs of kids blasting around on dirt bikes having a great time. More often than not, it’s at these local club tracks where kids are introduced to motorbikes. Boys and girls (under 10 years old) get out there and simply enjoy riding their bike without too much competition. Not many of the kids or parents care where they finish in the pack — it’s just about having fun.

Putty Road Blues
I just can’t believe what the safetycrats are doing to the Putty Road in the name of safety. The latest effort has been to cover the existing broken centreline on quite a few of the short- and medium-length straights down the Windsor end, with double yellow lines. Why? The only reason that I can fathom is that if you stop people from overtaking, it will slow them down, and we all know that speed causes accidents!

Company Policy
I’ve never been a big fan of riding in large groups. I’ve always found that the larger the group, the slower and more cumbersome the ride is. I understand why some riders enjoy it; it’s just never been my thing. I’m more than happy to ride with a few mates but my preference is usually the freedom and purity of the solo ride.
