LOOKING AT A PAINTING by David Hockney can feel a bit like standing on the side of a pool, sucked in by the silvery ripples and summertime smell of chlorine. Hockney himself may have felt it too, the day he flew over California and was struck by the sight of the backyard swimming pools below.
