Nestled among oaks and maple trees in Bonsall Canyon, Malibu, the family home of interior designer Vanessa Alexander is a study in sumptuous materials and discreet luxury

The scenic outdoor areas of this private Malibu hideaway feature Shou Sugi Ban cladding on the home’s exterior, while large windows and doors lead to the garden, where landscaping has been created by Terremoto Landscape. We spot a pair of Will Gull chairs from Orange
A luxury family home looking onto mountains and trees in glorious, sunny Malibu is where designer Vanessa Alexander lives with her husband, three teenage sons, and dogs. Drawing from Dutch and Belgian influences, this contemporary barn-style home was a comprehensive remodelling of the original house built in the 60s. The result is an extremely elegant and luxurious home, that still feels relaxed and comfortable. The striking and strong facade is crafted with cedar wood cladding with a Japanese-style Shou Sugi Ban charred finish, while the 12-feet high doors and windows maximise connection to the surrounding garden and infuse the house with natural light.
The poolside features custom daybeds by Vanessa's studio Alexander Designs, and these are shaded by umbrellas from Santa Barbara Designs. The landscaping features layers of trees starting with the grand palms above, olive trees and then greyish white sage
