The Breathing Wall Residence
Inside Outside
|Inside Outside (October 2016)
‘Our design philosophy is perhaps influenced by the fact that we consider ourselves to be “architects by profession” and “artists by passion”. We try to strike a balance in the way we practice both. Our office, for example, is a place filled with art – something that charges us while we design other projects. The quantity and quality of light, the feel of materials, the way we move about in space, colours, etc are factors that surround us on a day-to-day basis,’ introduces Ar. Lijo Jos for whom the Thrissur-based LIJO.RENY.architects is an ‘affair shared equally’ between his wife Reny and him.
Lijo Jos and Reny Lijo don’t need much of an introduction to those familiar with architecture. Their assignments have been covered extensively and substantial praise has been heaped on them in terms of a plethora of awards and achievements. Add to the impressive portfolio their art installations that both are equally adept at. But that is another story.
We go to their latest, high profiled Breathing Wall Residence….
‘It was difficult to know if it was day or night or for that matter rain or sunshine, while inside the client’s previous dingy home that stood on this site. And they craved for a new lease of life for their home!’ introduces Lijo Jos.

Describing the plot, he continues, ‘It was narrow with an equally tight public road to the west, a private road on the north, a house that abuts the site on the south and the client’s brother’s residence at the back. While designing within the possible, 6 m x 16 m footprint for the building, it was clear that a central ventilating volume was necessary to relieve the clients of their misery.’
